Regressie : een verdedigingsmechanisme waarbij het individu achteruit gaat in ontwikkeling om met stress om te gaan (bijvoorbeeld een overweldigde volwassene die zich gedraagt als een kind).
Sublimatie : dit verdedigingsmechanisme houdt in dat een impuls wordt bevredigd door op een substituut in te werken, maar op een sociaal aanvaardbare manier.
