La méthode clinique de traitement de la psychopathologie est appelée psychanalyse, l'organisation de la personnalité, les aspects et la dynamique de la personnalité sont les principes directeurs. Le refoulement : un mécanisme inconscient dans lequel l'ego pousse le dérangeant hors de la conscience.
Déni : l'ego nie les expériences bouleversantes de l'esprit conscient, amenant l'individu à refuser de reconnaître ou de croire ce qui se passe.
Projection : la tentative de l'ego de résoudre l'inconfort en attribuant les pensées et les motifs inacceptables de l'individu à une autre personne.
Déplacement : mécanisme par lequel l'individu peut assouvir une pulsion en agissant sur une personne de substitution d'une manière socialement inacceptable.
Régression : mécanisme de défense dans lequel l'individu recule dans son développement pour faire face au stress (par exemple, un adulte débordé agissant comme un enfant).
Sublimation : ce mécanisme de défense consiste à satisfaire une pulsion en agissant sur un substitut mais de manière socialement acceptable.
